It’s a question many parents ask: Is my child just a late talker, or could it be autism?
A speech delay means a child is slower to develop language skills but typically still:
- Makes eye contact
- Responds to their name
- Shows interest in people
- Uses gestures like pointing or waving
In contrast, ASD affects more than just speech. It also impacts:
- Social interaction (limited eye contact, reduced engagement)
- Communication (both verbal and nonverbal)
- Behavior (repetitive actions, strong routines)
For example, in our sessions, we’ve seen children with speech delays actively try to connect, even without words, while children with autism may struggle with that social connection itself.
The key difference?
Speech delay affects communication ability. Autism affects communication and social connection.
At Dream DIR ABA, we help families understand their child’s development and take the right next steps through ABA therapy in New Jersey.
